Mazda celebrate 20 years of the MX-5
Although sometimes maligned as a girl’s car, there’s no denying the popularity and value for money of the Mazda MX-5.
Since production began, 20 years ago, the Mazda MX-5 has won practically every award in its class, and this year is no exception. For the fourth successive year it has been recognized by the AutoExpress Best New Car Awards as the “Best Roadster”, beating stiff competition from the Mercedes Benz SLK and Audi TT Roadster. The two-seater is also popular in the Southern Hemisphere, winning numerous awards in Australia and New Zealand, with Wheels Magazine naming it the “Best Sports Roadster” at their 2009 awards.

Such is the MX-5’s popularity that even LeMans is getting in on the act of celebrating its twentieth birthday. 200 European MX-5 owners were invited to the famed racetrack for a party at the 24 Hours of LeMans. Owners were presented with an anniversary polo shirt, rally plate and special Mazda Camp. So popular is the MX-5 that other anniversary celebrations took place in Japan, Australia and America.
Above average fuel economy and handling certainly make up for the lack of horsepower when compared to its more powerful competitors. With over 850,000 sold since production began, which also gets Mazda into the Guinness Book of World Records, there’s no denying that many have bought into the great value and balanced ride that the Mazda MX-5 delivers.
Even with a convertible hard top, prices start around £16,000, and although you might get a bit of ribbing from your mates to begin with, a ride in your passenger seat will quickly see them queuing up to get one.
Another model from the Japanese manufacturer has also experienced a slight boost in popularity. The Mazda CX-7, after a slight redesign which saw an 85bhp drop in power and top speed fall to 124mph has actually increased sales. Despite these changes much of the car remains the same with ample cargo room and improved bodyshell for safety this car will surely be a hit with Mum’s up and down the country. Starting at around £25,000, Mazda has released yet another value-laden car that doesn’t break the bank.
